Brera Botanical Garden

Via Brera 28 – Via privata F.lli Gabba 10

The two historic specimens of Ginkgo biloba of the Brera Botanical Garden have been recognized as monumental trees for their age and dimensions!

This acknowledgment gives them special safeguard (according to the Italian Law 14th January 2013, n. 10) as part of the daily care work for the Brera Botanical Garden’s heritage, for the benefit of the community.

The two trees are two and a half centuries old, and were chosen as the symbol of the Brera Botanical Garden because they are contemporary with the period of its foundation as a scientific institution.

More precisely, they have been recognized as a “homogeneous group of monumental trees” being two specimens – a male and a female – with similar ecologically features, and for their historical-cultural value.

In these autumn days the two large trees offer the visitor of the Botanical Garden a suggestive glance into the historic arboretum, thanks to the progressive shading towards an intense golden yellow of their characteristic fan-shaped leaves, that are gradually falling so that the trees can face the coldest season. In spring, the two specimens will gradually put new leaves again, and photosynthetic activity will fully resume.
