The heart of the Botanical Garden is the botanical collections. These contain plant species preserved for their scientific, conservation, ecological, cultural and popular interest. The collections are kept in greenhouses or outdoors, and include both native species of the Lombard and Italian flora and species from different parts of the world.
A collection is a collection of plants that are united by their growing environment and adaptations (such as succulents), by their systematic affinity (such as Proteaceae, ferns or Bromeliaceae), by their use by humans (dyeing plants, food plants) or by particular and surprising survival strategies (carnivorous plants). A particular type of collection at the Botanical Garden Città Studi is represented by the reconstruction of some of the natural habitats of Lombardy.
